What is Astronomy ?
Astronomy is the study of the stars, planets and universe. Astronomers are scientist that use large telescopes in order to analyze data about he sky. Through these scientist we learn about the celestial phenomena in our universe.
What are the Pros and Cons of this job ?
1. It isn't a very labor intensive work field. When I say "intensive" I mean its not physically demanding you to exert your energy the way a construction worker or doctor would have to. However it is requiring you spend a lot of mental energy and it is demanding on your brain and sleep because you are up all night and you are studying the data while you are having down time.
2. Contribution to the betterment of humanity. When you do something like scientific research I think that the best feeling you can have is helping the world become a little less ignorant because you uncover new things with your discoveries even if they fail you still learn from those failures.
3.You can win a Nobel prize for research and new discoveries. So if you work in the field of science that has yet to discover more things then you have a good chance of winning a Nobel prize if you make a very important discovery. In Astronomer there is yet to be learned about stars, black holes, dark energy and dark matter. Its also one of my dreams to win a Nobel prize so this is definitely a pro.
4.Get to travel the world and go to remote places. Many people consider this a con but I personally would love to see the world and I enjoy isolation at times. Also the up side is most likely my job would be paying for me to travel to these places to go work, such as the Keck observatory in Hawaii.
5. Is a very prestigious job that is well represented in the field of science. When people hear Astronomer most people think "oOoO a physicist!" and its true you can be an Astronomer and also have a degree in physics but the thing I love is that its not field that is ridiculed. It is to know about what's out there many people right now are wondering what out there and want to understand the universe around us.
6. Will be able to work until old age. So since this job doesn't demand for you to be young and vigorous and in fact requires you to have many years of knowledge and experience which means that you will have a job until you need to retire. You then know that the older you get the more valuable your knowledge is in the field of science.
Cons
1. You have to go to school for a long time and get a PhD. in physics or astronomy. A long time in school means A lot of money you will have to pay to have a BS, Masters, and PhD. This is also a lot of school work so its not a career for those who do not like school because you will be in school for a good while.
2.You have to stay on top of your classes and work 60 hour weeks manly nights running the telescope. As I said before this is a mentally demanding job you must be very hard working. When you get the job you will be working at night or day if you are a solar astronomer, but you will be working 60 our work weeks.
3.There are not many jobs available. This job is growing at a regular paste but its also not moving very fast even though its a STEM field but that because it requires a lot.

- Hello, my name is Angelina Gallego. Ever since a very young age I have been fascinated and captivated by the world around me. Through this fascination I developed a love for unwavering science that grew to become a passion. While other people my age spend time watching cartoons I watched documentaries on space, universe, and read books about these subjects. I am someone who is distinguishable and unique in the way that I think. I am optimistic, flexible, and most of all a hard worker.
- The reason that you should hire me is because you will find no one like me. I am someone who is truly passionate about the things I want to pursue and will not let anything deter me from that goal. I can work this other people and work by myself and be effective in what ever task that I am doing. If I have to do something small scale like getting coffee then you can ensure I will be the fastest and most accurate coffee runner you’ve ever seen. I can not and will not let any opportunity for success pass me by.
- One day I hope to be remembered in the history textbooks. I want the world to know who I am, I don't want my legacy to die once my physical body has. I want to win a nobel prize, be the next albert einstein or stephen hawking. Most of all I want to be remembered for making a scientific contribution to humanity and affect as many lives as possible in a positive way.
- I have been a part of the STEM program at my high school for three years. In this program we were placed in a university environment and learned at an accelerated pace about science concepts. After we did those scientific experiments. I was also a part of the MESA program at my middle and high school for five years. In this program we would participate in engineering competitions and learn about science through hands on experiments. Finally for my senior year of high school when many tend to slack off I chose to take honors physics and even though I didn’t take the physics AP Course I took the AP Physics test with 4 other classmates.
- I believe that I am a team player because I have worked in groups before and I follow the code that I am only as strong as my weakest team member. That idea has taught me to never leave anyone behind no matter how much they are struggling. I love to help others and when everyone works together things can get done more efficiently and in better quality.
- I have never gotten into any kind of conflict with a professor or boss because I always follow protocol and respect the person above me. I try to make sure that I get to know my boss so that I know what not to do or what my bother them. In doing so I can assure that I will not create a conflict. If I do encounter some problem then I normally try to talk to the professor of boss and find a common ground.
- My greatest weakness is my wanting to appease everyone. I have a problem with telling people “no,” and so I tend to get stuck with a lot of extra work. I because of this avoid conflict but I put myself in trouble. I know that a way to fix this is to tell people kindly that I can’t do whatever they are asking me for.
- My Professors would describe we as a very kind and caring hard worker. I am determined to finish anything I start and I never give up on other just as I never give up on myself. If I need help I am not afraid to approach them and ask for it. Most importantly I am not afraid to admit that I am wrong and that I don't know or have the answers to anything.
- I believe that a successful manager should be able to make a hard decision very quickly. They have to have compassion and be able to communicate well with employees. They should also be trustful and truthful. finally they should be someone that you respect but also can be friends with.
- I wouldn’t change anything in my life if I could go back and change one thing. The reason for that is because everything that has happened up to this point in my life has changed the people I met and the things I have done. Since I lost my mother and lived with my grandmother I was able to learn values I wouldn’t have learned if she was alive. The schools that I didn't get accepted to gave me an even better opportunity to go to a school that will give me even better opportunities to not only learn academically but learn who I am. Everything in my life has happened for a reason and if I change one thing it can act as a butterfly effect changing the whole sequence of life, and I love my life the way it is.
What do you need to know in order to be an Astronomer ?
- Physics - the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. The subject matter of physics, distinguished from that of chemistry and biology, includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms.
- Mathematics - arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
- Computers and Electronics - the ability to identify and use circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
- English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar in order to write proposals for grants.
- Education and Training - Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects you need to have at lest your masters to work as an astronomer.
